My Updates

21 The Finish Line at Cahors

Tuesday 26th Jul

26 July 2022  Distance 26.93  Time 51min 58sec

A long descent from the small township of Sauzet to the rolling landscape rural landscape of farms and vineyards. before a small climb to the historic town of Cahors (dating from Roman times) As this was the last ride of the ‘French Tour’, I rode a bit harder and finished 23 in the Stage out of 36 (at this Stage - that won’t last as there will presumably be more riders to come)  The French Tour has been great to do, with a diversity of rides and challenges - differing terrain and villages. Its meant a return to the indoor bike trainer to improve my fitness - and to think seriously about a trip next year in the beautiful French countryside.

My overall time of the 21 Stages was 1day 1hr 53min (and not to forget - 40sec!)

Total distance was 360.4km

(Now quite insignificant to the incredible efforts of the lads in the Tour de France who did 3328km (the winner Jonas Vingegaard in a time of 79hrs 33 min 20sec

And then currently underway is the very exciting and compelling Tour de Femmes covered by SBS)

20 Rocamadour Time Trial

Sunday 24th Jul
Date 24 July 2022 Distance 40.17 km Time 1hr 26min

Last night the Tour de France ran their time trial on this same course; the winner was Wout Van Aert in a time of 47min 59.86 sec.
My time was around 38min longer, so the reality is no podium finish! (for a brief time I finished the 'French Tour' (ie this virtual ride) in 20th position - it will move out as more riders finish)
Start and finish of the ride is Lacapelle-Marival, and Rocamadour respectively, both attractive villages. Rocamadour is a medieval village, with old monastery buildings and houses that cling to the cliff face. The approach road tunnels into the sandstone cliff face. Just to ensure that you work hard right to the end, the climb into Rocamadour reaches grades of 12.6%.

Summary of various ‘Missing' (ie no blog report) Rides

Thursday 21st Jul

Stage 1. Ebeltoft to Femmoller - AGF French Tour

Date 3 July Distance 29.94 Time 58

The first Stage of the AGF French Tour. This stage was held in Denmark.

My first return to Fulgaz for a number of months after back issues. Largely flat but still hard work for me. (The area is so low in places that you’d expect it go under in an adverse climate sea/ storm event) Definitely got into the sweat zone!

Stage 3. Luz Ardiden 2019

Date of ride: 5 July   Distance 13.50km Time 1hr 18 min Elevation gain 1030m

Unrelenting. Just on the outskirts of Luz - Saint Sauveur, I recognised the hotel that Linda and I stayed (prior to doing our ascent of Col du Tourmalet on our Bromptons in May 2019)

Stage 7. Apt to Cavaillon

Date of ride 9 July   Distance 46.03 km Time 1hr 46 min

Saw the Tour last night - absolutely gruelling climb; let alone the finish at nearly 24%. Gutted by the finish of Kamna. Inspiring? yes but it didnt transfer to my ride today. Mostly downhill; but it's circuit - no neat gain!! A longer ride - and had to have a 'nature stop'- admittedly a little room out the back (that was about as close as I got to a TdF ride today)

19 Hautacam

Thursday 21st Jul
Date 21 July  Distance 15.41km  Time 1hr 34min 1180 m elevation
This ride features as a section in Stage 18 of this years TdF. Thankfully I wasn't doing the whole TdF route. My ride started with a 6 to 7% grade - the profile looked smooth to the top - not to be! Some sections sneaked up to 12 to 14% but flattened  to around 5 to 65 near the top. Didnt matter, I was amply stuffed.by then.
At lower levels the ride passed through rural land and some forests, which then cleared to alpine meadows. At one stage it dodged some ponies strolling on the road; I was too busy to get a photo.
A tough ride.

18 Artignosc - sur - Verdon

Wednesday 20th Jul

20 July 2022 Distance 25.07km Time 1hr 4min

A loop route that starts and finishes in Baudinard - sur - Verdon in Provence. Expected a coffee at the end of my ride in this relaxed village of sandstone buildings. Leaving Baudinard - sur - Verdon it is a descent down to the Le Verdon river, through a dry stony terrain; the forest looking similar to eucalyptus forests.

17. Alpe D'Huez

Monday 18th Jul
In 2011, Linda and I came to Bourg D’Oisans. That evening, I hired a bike, had a few practice laps around the town. Next morning, quite icy but sunny (with one of 300 such days that Alpe D’Huez is famed) A long ride with plenty of stops to 'absorb the views' ie recovery (was early in season so not many other riders) This time there were scores of riders on the road - even not long after the first couple of corners. Many it seemed, were in deep contemplation of their pedals - are too stiff?? Others were strewn in awkward angles against the barriers - smelling the roses? My support team were having none of that so I had to continue to grind. At the top of the climb, the younger team member (Mabel, my granddaughter) was adamant that I was ‘too sweaty’; refused to go for coffee with me until I showered.

16. Châteaux de Périgord

Monday 18th Jul
17 July 2022 Distance 30.9km  Time 1hr 5min
Small villages, charming countryside, undercut sandstone cliff faces. Great ride.

14 Brittanys' Sunshine Coast - Concarneau to Pont Aven. Distance 31.46km

Monday 18th Jul
Relatively flat, with some bumps along the way. Neat seaside villages with people strolling the foreshore paths and our rider doing well to avoid them. Also a couple of near misses with cars in the narrow crowded streets. Small boats moored at the wharves but our rider doesn't allow much time to view them! Apparently Pont Aven was home to many artists; tho i didn't see Paul Gauguin

13, Mont Ventoux from Bedoin

Friday 15th Jul
Stage 13
14 July 2022 Distance 21.12Km Time 2hr 5min  Elevation gained 1585m
This is the one that I feared; its REALLY tough. Leaving the start at Bedoin, there’s a modest (??) grade of 4- 6% (thats steeper than the ride up from The Basin to Sasssafras) for about 6km. Afterwards the grade kicks up to an average grade over 10% - no relief at all to the top. However beautiful golden colours of the trees along the way. The ride passes a lot of other riders struggling up; one of the riders had a cargo bike with a young passenger who seemed quite relaxed.
Eventually the forest clears and enter infamous stark rocky terrain (in ‘reality’ this area can be subject to strong cold winds. I had my own winds blowing - overhead fan, and floor fan Essential to keeping cool) The end just dragged on; the Metrological building never seemed to get closer, and lots of mini stops required. (tho still faster than my previous climb) A long hot shower to recover!

9 Villages en Provence: Distance 45.68km 1hr 52

Friday 15th Jul
Bright blue skies, barely any wind, small villages often at the top of hill, sandstone buildings hugging narrow streets with cobblestone paving. Outside dining areas begging a stop for a coffee and patisserie. Keep going grind up a hill and through the village and whiz down the other side.  Overall a testing ride.

10. Les Plus Beaux villages de La Dordogne

Monday 11th Jul

11 July 2022

The 'French Tour' picks up the flavour of the Tour de France There's 21 rides to do but fortunately they are MUCH shorter than the Tour. (usually taking a bit over an hour - long enough to work up a sweat, and to get pretty stuffed)

I've now done 10 rides; todays ride was 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de Dordogne' https://fulgaz.com/fulgaz-rides/?fg_ride=47d7afbbe18892c238bc8764

Photo attached

The hardest ride to date was the 3rd ride 'Les Ardiden'

https://fulgaz.com/fulgaz-rides/?fg_ride=f309c0a9a006e6762bf6109d

Only 15km, but unrelenting (Interestingly the route started in Luz de Saveur where Linda and I stayed before tackling Col de Tourmalet on our Bromptons in May 2019)

The highlight of todays ride was Domme, located after a long steep ride to the top of hill (typically of many historical French villages)
